A Midsummer Exploration of Lapland & The Arctic Circle,
plus Stockholm, Tallinn and St. Petersburg
Come aboard the Andrea for a journey into this unique region of Northern Europe—the Gulf of Bothnia— “Land of the Midnight Sun.” With warm sunny days stretching long into evening, explore secluded archipelagos and fishing villages along the Swedish and Finnish coasts. Learn about the region’s unique geological features and the Sami people—more commonly known as Laplanders.
In places like Jurmo Island—part of Finland’s Southwestern Archipelago National Park—and the historic lighthouse island of Utö, we will utilize our Zodiac landing craft to go ashore for nature hikes and walking tours. In the Scandinavian “wooden town” of Rauma, see the still-inhabited 17th- and 18th-century frame houses that have earned it status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Across the Gulf of Bothnia, learn about the beautiful High Coast, a unique stretch of Sweden that actually rose in elevation as ancient glaciers melted away. The Andrea’s Zodiac landing craft will again come in handy as we explore the picture-perfect waterside villages of Bonhamn and Ulvön.
In Umeå, discover what life was like on a typical 19th-century Västerbotten coastal farm, and from our dock in Luleå, travel above the Arctic Circle to meet and learn about the nomadic Sami people native to this harsh region. Once again heading south, pause in the stately city of Sundsvall and the wind-swept island villages of Mariehamn and Kökar. Your adventure ends with the bustling urban environments, historic architecture and world-class museums of Stockholm, Tallinn and St. Petersburg. |
