ROME / CATANIA
We arrive at the Catania Airport and meet our guide and driver. After driving tour of Catania, we drive to Taormina, perched over 2000 feet above sea level along Sicily’s eastern coast. This famed resort of Ancient Rome has winding stone streets, narrow alleys, and exquisite buildings. We check into our hotel, have lunch on your own, and rest after the long transatlantic flight. For those with endless energy, you can stroll through the town exploring and shopping on your own. Tonight, dinner at our hotel in Giarnini Naxon. Overnight.

TAORMINA
(Excursion to Mt. Etna)
Today is for the adventuresome. We will travel to the foot of Mt. Etna. There we take the cable car and Land Rovers to the top of Europe’s largest volcanoes. Nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. It is considered to be the most active volcano in the world. After lunch (on your own), we will return to Taormina. Remainder of the day is free time. Dinner at our hotel.

SYRACUSE / NOTO / RAGUSA
After breakfast we depart for Syracuse, founded by Corinthian settlers in 733 BC. The city became the supreme Mediterranean power of its age, surpassing Athens in prestige. We visit the Archeological Museum, home to the richest and best displayed museum in Sicily and Ortygia, the medieval island. We then drive to Noto, finest baroque town in Sicily. After a short visit and tour, we drive to Ragusa for dinner and overnight.

RAGUSA / CALTAGIRONE /PIAZZA ARMERIA / ENNA
After breakfast and Mass, we tour Ragusa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We tour the Cathedral and other historic sites. We then drive to Caltagirone, center for the famous Sicilian ceramics. After touring the city and some free time for shopping, we continue to drive to Piazza Armerina and visit the world famous villa Romana del Casale, a well preserved Roman emperor’s country house and famed for its mosaics. Then on to Enna for our dinner and overnight.

ENNA / AGRIGENTO
After breakfast and Mass, we tour the mountain top city of Enna, the “navel of Sicily”. We visit the Castello di Lombardia and the museum. We then drive to the Valley of the Temples with its scenic views of olive groves, almond trees and wondrous temples. We visit the medieval city’s historical center, the Romanesque Gothic Church of San Nicola. The remaining day is free for exploring and shopping. After dinner in our hotel, we drive back to the majestic Valley of the Temples for a memorable view of the ruins bathed in floodlights. Dinner and overnight in hotel.

AGRIGENTO / MARSALA /ERICE / PALERMO
After breakfast, we drive to Marsala, seaport of Italy at the western tip of Sicily. Marsala trades in grain and salt and is well known for its sweet Marsala wine. We visit a winery and indulge is some sweet wine tasting. We then drive to Erice, an isolated hill-top town. It is the only Sicilian town that has been inhabited since prehistoric times by the Sicani, Elimir, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and the Normans. On particularly clear days, you can see Cape Bon, an African outpost of Tunisia. Free time for your shopping and visits to the medieval Castle of Venus, ruins and the older churches; San Guiliano, San Martino and San Giovanni. We then drive down the “curvy road” and go to Palermo. Dinner and overnight in hotel. (An optional night tour of Palermo for those who are adventuresome and not too tired…not included)

PALERMO
Today we take a guided tour of the capital of Sicily, including the Norman Cathedral, the royal Palace with its mosaics and the famous Cathedral of Monreale. We also visit the Santa Rosalia sanctuary built in 1625, housing a church and a convent. Tonight dinner is at a local restaurant.

PALERMO / CEFALU / PALERMO
Today we take an all day excursion to Cefalu.
This captivating seaside town is beneath a steep mountain all under the ever-present gaze of the Norman-Arab-Byzantine Cathedral, one of the greatest churches of Southern Europe, nestled between the Madonie Mountains and the sea. Cefalu’s mountain boasts the ruins of a large fortress and an ancient Sicanian-Greek temple. The view from the summit is inspiring. After lunch and free time for shopping and exploring on your own, we return to Palermo. Tonight a “gala dinner” with wine and music.
